Personalized learning and competency-based learning plays an essential role in education and the learning environment of students. The ultimate goal should be for all students to be prepared and demonstrate their ability to be lifelong learners, who can think critically, problem solve and work collaboratively with one another in school and as they pursue post-secondary education and career.
Active districts, schools, and teachers meet the needs of the student by personalizing the learning, and supporting each student and helping them through engagement, motivation and completing various assignments, projects, and etcetera through research and investigation; they are implementing competency-based learning. The students enrolled in my classes range from grades 9 to 14. These students receive all of their core content academic instruction, along with functional life skills, transition (college awareness, career awareness, and independent living) instruction within my classroom. The access general education classes for electives and other courses, which match their interests. As a special education teacher, I provide come components of personalized learning and competency-based learning, along with delivering Specialized Academic Instruction within my classroom. Below is a list of several ways I am implementing personalized learning and competency-based learning into my practice include: Using Digital Content and Tools (i.e., News2You, MobyMax, Prowise Screen, one-to-one devices, communication boards, etc.). Classroom Furniture and Flexibility in Seating and Work Stations Involving students and their parents in grading and progress checks Students performing self-reflection. In special education it is essential to personalized learning; as one size does NOT fit all, especially for students with moderate to severe special needs (i.e., Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fragile X, Down Syndrome, and others).
