When I completed my Education Administrative credential program with Touro University in 2016, I was sure that I was done with postgraduate coursework. However, I knew I would always be a life-long learner through attendance of professional development workshops, training, etc. as an educator. Although, I realized in my teaching since 2016 that I was missing tools in my tool bag for incorporating 21st-century skills, the 4C's (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity) in my teaching practice and delivery of instruction. Additionally, my students were continuing to struggle with their reading comprehension in all of the classes, along with those they were enrolled with me.
While I had participated in numerous professional development opportunities in the area of technology, through Napa Learns, NCOE, Marin County Office of Education, New Tech High and many others, I realized that I was not equipped with skills needed to incorporate innovative strategies into the delivery of my instruction. Additionally, I struggled with leading by example for my students; as time management was a challenge with affording me opportunties to familiarize myself with various online platforms, iPad/Tablet applications, etc. Attending to the coursework, reading assignments, and zoom interactions with the instructors and peers were challenging at times, while being employed, and managing a home while raising grandchildren. However, the support of the instructors and cohort members gave me the motivation and confidence I needed to push forward. My action research project initial driving question changed slighting in its working, the primary focus remained the same throughout the program. However, the results were remarkable higher than anticipated, along with other data results. Along with gains in reading comprehension, the students showed gains in their reading decoding. Lastly, there was a notable increase in engagement and motivation as students explored various innovation strategies, innovative tools, and devices. Lastly, I would like to express my appreciation to all of the Touro Innovative Learning Program instructors, advisors, staff members and the Napa Learns Staff and contributors. Without all of these individuals and both the Touro and Napa Learns support I would not be the Innovative Learning Master Educator that I am today.
